Attic Insulation — The Single Most Impactful Upgrade for AC Efficiency
If you could make only one insulation improvement to your home, it should almost always be the attic. The attic is where the greatest heat exchange occurs in summer, and improving attic insulation delivers more cooling relief per dollar than virtually any other home upgrade.
Why the Attic Matters So Much
On a sunny summer day, an uninsulated or under-insulated attic can reach temperatures of 130–150°F. That superheated air sits directly above your living spaces, radiating heat downward through the ceiling. Your air conditioner runs almost continuously trying to offset this constant heat input.
The Three Layers of Attic Thermal Protection
Effective attic insulation involves more than just blowing in some fiberglass. A complete approach includes:
Air sealing: Before adding any insulation, gaps around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and attic hatches must be sealed. Air leaks bypass insulation entirely.
Insulation layer: Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass to the recommended R-value (R-38 to R-60 in most of the U.S.).
Radiant barrier: A reflective foil material installed under the roof deck that reflects radiant heat before it even enters the attic space, reducing attic temperatures by 20–30°F.
Cost vs. Savings
Professional attic insulation typically costs $1,500–$3,500 for an average home. The EPA’s Energy Star program estimates that proper attic air sealing and insulation saves homeowners an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs. In hot climates where AC runs heavily, payback periods of 3–5 years are common.
DIY Considerations
Blowing in loose-fill insulation is a DIY-friendly project — many home improvement stores rent blowing machines when you purchase insulation bags. Air sealing, however, requires careful attention to detail and is best done before adding insulation layers.
Don’t overlook the attic hatch or door. An uninsulated attic access point is a significant source of heat loss and gain — insulated covers are inexpensive and easy to install.
